My Baby is All Ass-Backward

Who is this dude, Frank Breech?

Well, it looks like my baby is what they call frank breech. Like three to four percent of all babies, he is bottom down, head up. A C-section is already on the books for eight days from today.

However, experts say one way to coax the baby’s head down so he can safely dive out vaginally is to place headphones inside mom’s pants toward her pubic bone and play music for ten minutes, 6-8 times a day. That’s right, the right song played near my girl parts can save me a major surgery and an unsightly scar.

This begs the obvious question, what music would lure a baby’s head down so he can be born the old-fashioned way?

Here are some suggestions I’ve gotten via Twitter, which I think are pretty genius:

“Into the Great Wide Open” by Tom Petty

“Down in the Hole” by the Rolling Stones

“Jump Around” by House of Pain

“Follow You Down” by The Gin Blossoms

“Hold On, I’m Coming” by Sam and Dave

“Head On” by the Pixies

“Heading Out to the Highway” by Judas Priest

“Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood

“Upside Down” by Diana Ross

“We Gotta Get Out of this Place” by the Animals

“Turn! Turn! Turn!” by The Byrds

In short, my V needs a DJ ‘cause the baby needs to spin. Whaddya got?

lol! well seems like youre gonna get your c-section after all! my kid was breech up to the last minute. unlike you i’m petrified of any form of surgery so that was a relief.

So T … in the event Buster-Quinn-Name-to-be-determined doesn’t do the groove thing to his momma’s VJ efforts – think about some cool potential offshoots that can happen from his encounter with that strange dude Frank Breech. There is tangential evidence that babies who do not polarize head down have a statistically higher incidence of left-handedness. Every mother wants to think their child is special and what better way than to have them fit into a statistical super-minority over the past several thousand years we’ve remained almost entirely right dominate (90+ percent of the population) so being in the 8 to 10 percent responsible for a huge amount of art, music and sports statistics is pretty damn cool.

    Some groovy preliminary science

    http://www.iched.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=iched&item_id=research_lefthandedness

I have adult left handed friends because I work for an art based media company and many interestingly were breech babies. I also moderate a group for the parents of preemies (and other NICU graduates) and we have more like a 25 percent ‘lefty’ rate on the list kids (anecdotal of course).

So when will Busters Birthday actually be ?

Good luck and enjoy the moments – they will spin you around emotionally in a way you simply couldn’t predict. Mazeltov !

Oh and L’shanah Tova to you my dear

    • I love this. And I love lefties. My dad, brother & grandfather are all left-handed. It’s nice to hear something positive about this breech thing.
C-Section scheduled for Sept. 24th, unless Buster decides to bust out sooner. Promise to keep you posted and can’t thank you enough for the support and new year’s well wishes.
      T

  3. Laura says:

Good Luck T. Can’t wait to hear the birthing story.
You’re gonna be a great mom!!

  4. Cory says:

I can’t think of a more appropriate artist than the Jewish Elvis, Neil Diamond, singing “Turn Around” followed by “Baby can I hold you.”

    Best Wishes T!

Hey Teresa, hope you read this before you have the baby because you will definitely be too busy after! My son was born a year ago and the cord was wrapped around his neck 3 times so I had to have a C-sec and it was just fine. I went home after 3 days and was moving around no problem. The first day is a little tough after the anesthesia wears off, it hurts to get up, and I was very itchy ( I made my husband bring me his backscratcher). But do what they say, get up and walk around and it helps get you heal up faster. You will be great! Good Luck! You will be amazed at how your life changes for the better.

  6. Ashley J! says:

    T,
Congrats on your baby having a b-day set!
I had a C-section 9 months ago, it was planned. can you say 9lb baby?
anyway, its not as scary as it sounds. Once they do the spinal, your legs feel like they’re on fire then you go numb. Like someone said earlier, DO NOT look up into the light. you can see everything and it is not pretty. Have your hubby take pics. it might be bloody, but you’ll regret not having one later.
just relax, ask for drugs, and try to go #2 as soon as you can so you won’t be there forever. it hurts more than the surgery itself. no one prepared me for that one.

    • christine says:

      OMG yes!!
No one really tells you how important it is to take a dump, until you end up ’saving’ up for a week, pushing for AT LEAST 30 minutes, and birthing the same weight as your baby! Of course toilets aren’t made for the ’size’,and there she blows! Bending over to clean up your poo after major surgery isnt really an option. I had to interrupt my husband and sister in law having dinner to ask for help. Can you say mortified?! Ugh, never again!

So T, grab so stool softener and take a poop ASAP!

  7. Cari says:

    Ahhh….of course….

    “SHAKE YOUR BOOTY”!!!!!!!!

  8. Eman says:

Aren’t you glad that your lil’ Vajayjay will stay intact? Remember that worry you made mention of about possibly accidenatlly pooping on Adam’s couch during a podcast??? Voi-là!!! That worry is gone.

On a serious note, good luck. I hope everything comes out ok ;)

    Long time fan, love ya.

  9. mbrown says:

I’ve had 2 C-sections, the second one bc baby was also “ass backward” and believe me, this is the way to go. It’s great if they’re all set to take the traditional exit route, but from what I’m told your vajayjay will never look or feel the same after they’ve disembarked. So embrace the C-section and be glad your lady business will still maintain its youthful vim and vigor once it’s all said and done. Plus, I’m no pill popper but I really did enjoy the post C-section Percocet.

  10. Becky says:

T, here’s wishing you and your babe good health in eight days!!!!! We’re all thinking of you!!!

  11. summertime says:

Eight days?! That’s so exciting. Congratulations Mama!

  12. Charles H. Bryan says:

What? Not even a mention for Humble Pie’s “Thirty Days in the Hole”?

  13. Bob says:

    “You Spin Me Round”

    Good luck T!!

  14. Sheila says:

OK these are admittedly a bit cheesy – but I want to play

Knockin on Heavens Door – Bob Dylan
Wide Open Spaces – The Dixie Chicks

  15. Andy says:

Don’t fear the C-section. My wife had 2 babies via C-section. The scar is BARELY visible at this point and really the only people that see it are me & her (its lower than you think its gonna be).

Also, it FORCED me to jump in & change diapers since she was recovering the first several days. Got me over the fear factor right away.

    Either way, good luck!

  16. Maria says:

Good luck, T! One of my friends had a baby earlier this year who was frank breech, except that they didn’t know it until she was already pushing! Poor girl went into labor so quickly that she didn’t have time to get the drugs, either. But hey, she was able to eventually get the baby out on her own! (After threat of a C-section.) The baby’s hips had a touch o’ displaysia, but now she’s doing fine.

And surely someone else has already suggested this song, but here goes: “Push It” by Salt ‘n’ Pepa.

  17. Schadenfreude says:

Dylan – “Can you please crawl out your window?”

  18. kathy says:

don’t know if it has already been suggested, but try moxibustion. The acupuncturist burns a little stinky candle on one of your toes. It is supposed to make the baby turn. Its noninvasive and no less weird that putting headphones on your hoo-ha.

  19. Ramie says:

Good luck Teresa, I’m sure that you and baby will be great!

I had the exact same situation with my first pregnancy…about 2 weeks before the due date, the doctor found out he was breech. They tried to turn him (‘version’ procedure at the hospital…they lubed up my stomach and triced to flip him…didn’t work and was a bit painful). So, they scheduled the c-section for two weeks later. Everything went well. The scar isn’t that bad and my husband was great (changing most of the diapers and doing the ‘labor’ around the house while I recovered).

My second birth was completely different. My daughter wasn’t breech and was able to do a VBAC!

Loved hearing your on Adam’s podcast yesterday. I hope you continue to do his podcast, because you are always my favorite ‘guest!’

    Love you!!!! Good luck!

  20. Pregzilla says:

My first baby was frank breech. I tried everything under the sun to get him to turn, including an external version. Nothing worked. Go ahead and get prepared for a c-section. It’s not as bad as you think.

  21. Jaime says:

The good thing about the reason for your possible c-section is that it doesn’t necessarily mean you will have to have another if you have more kids. I’ve had two…and let me tell you, the second (planned) one was a way better experience.

If you end up having to have the surgery, be prepared to feel very cold (it’s part the meds, part nerves and part the temp in the OR).

Now, on to the more important stuff – do you have this baby named yet?!

    • Lee Anne says:

I second Jaime’s warning about feeling very, very cold. I was not prepared to have a c-section and was seriously alarmed by how cold I felt immediately before the procedure. Also, you may get a little (or a lot) nauseated. It’s normal and will pass. I felt nauseated for a few minutes while getting stitched up, but the nurse talked me through it. Just breathe and concentrate on your partner’s face. Best of luck and take care.

  22. Nickie says:

Hoping Baby turns for you. Mine was head down and I still had to have an emergency C because he was in distress at 4cm. In the end, a healthy baby is most important, no matter how he gets out.

  23. sheri says:

Id have to go with “Head First” by The Babys. Best of Luck!

  24. Dayv says:

We all know that baby could love on some of Gwen Stefani’s “Sweet Escape”!

  25. Ashley says:

Love your blog! I’m due for a c-section on monday because my little bugger is breech too. Apparently my uterus is heart-shaped and there is little possiblity of him turning. Keep us posted if if turns. They may have to do a version, doc manually pushes the baby from the outside at 37 weeks, but that not even 100%. (obviously didn’t work for me).

  26. mallory says:

if you do any yoga, i hear shoulder stands are the best for turning babies

  31. Cherri says:

I’ve done some research and if your due date is the 2nd, 8 days is a bit early for them to do a C section. As long as your healthy, you can go 10-14 days past the due date before decisions like C sections need to be made. I wanted a home birth and had midwives and eventually transported to the hospital for a very difficult labor and ultimate C section. I don’t recommend it. I was so swollen from the IV fluids I was bigger after the baby was born than before. The first few weeks, which are rough normally, were even harder since I was recovering from a surgery that didn’t go all that well. The V way is the best way. Don’t let them bully you into an early date just for convenience.

    • Amanda says:

Oh get over yourself Cherri! Something tells me that her doctor (who likely has a medical degree) has done some research too.

Just to add to your count T- I’ve had two c-sections. My daughter was born 4 weeks early due to complications, I labored for twelve hours, and then I couldn’t wait for those bastards to cut me open! My son was a scheduled section just past 38 weeks and it could not have been easier. In fact, we left the hospital a day early because we were both doing so well. Both recoveries my family had to try to KEEP ME FROM DOING THINGS! Because I already felt well enough to do them but my docs with all their researchin said no.

So that’s my two cents. And the scar is nothing compared to anal leakage I would think…

      • Truther says:

        Amanduh,

Get over yourself. T stated on the AC podcast awhile back that she wouldn’t mind a section. I’m calling BS on the whole baby being breeched. She’s propbably just tired of being pregnant and doesn’t want to go through the whole birth process.

  32. Cari says:

“Don’t Wait Too Long” by Madeleine Peyroux

If you do end up with a c-section, you have to just relax and go with it. To be honest, it’s a very strange experience – I’ve had two. Just focus on your breathing, because that is the only thing you can control. Try not to look at the light above the operating table (it has chrome around it). You’ll see the reflection of what might be considered a crime scene. It’s not pretty. Sorry, I know you’re going to look now, but at least you’ve been warned.

Good luck in the days ahead, T…this is such an exciting time! Love your blog and your work on the podcast!

  33. Tom Gordon says:

I’ve got a couple – “Sound of Your Voice” – Barenaked Ladies

    “Deliver Me” Ellis Paul

    “The Leaving Song” – AFI

“Desperately Wanting” – Better Than Ezra

“Changes” – The cover version by Butterfly Boucher

“The World Turned Upside Down” – Coldplay

    “Hanginaround” – Counting Crows

“The Space Between” Dave Matthews Band

“Rude Awakenings” – The Dropkick Murphys

“Long Way Around” or “Feels So Right” – Eagle Eye Cherry

“Still Here Waiting” – Eve 6

I am sure I could come up with some more, but what can I say, I have eclectic tastes in music…

  34. sarah says:

The scar isn’t all that bad – it’s called a bikini cut and mine has faded completely. I don’t know how but it’s smaller than a baby’s head…I know that doesn’t make sense but it’s just like a 2 inch long line. I was in labor for 36 hours and ended up with a c-section….I wish I had just had the c-section to begin with. You’re not missing anything with the lack of labor!

  35. tania says:

    haha, love it

  36. Tracy says:

Hi. Love your blog. I am due a few weeks after you and am also dealing with a breech. Do not know if this would interest you, but I am seeing an acupuncturist who specializes in pre-natal care. http://www.floatchinesemedicalarts.com/952.html She is treating me in her office and i am doing moxibustion at home, under her instruction. I do not know if it is working yet, though. As well, my OB recommended seeing a chiropractor, http://doctorberlin.com/ . I also recommend the spinning babies info someone else mentioned. I was able to turn my first this way, although i think it was earlier in the pregnancy. Good luck. I am sure he will come out fine regardless of his exit path!
